 Rescue, Advocacy

and general links to other minds at work

"Use your brain or someone will use it for you."
Rubin Blades

You can get involved directly in helping animals in many ways - below are some of the organizations and some of the ways you can do so. Your neighborhood Shelter or rescue is yet another way. Emailing your legislator , phoning or writing a letter when you care about a problem helps.

Below are websites that work to change the world we live in. They may work at different thing and sometimes have common goals. I have added sites that always have animal issues, some have world and human issues as well. There are many other causes of equal importance not found here.

Advocacy and if or how we chose to make our voices heard is a personal choice.

The Bella Moss Foundation, the world’s only organization supporting owners of pets infected by bacterial diseases such as Clostridium difficile (C-Diff) and MRSA, has been awarded full UK registered charity status (1122246).

 www.thebellamossfoundation.com
www.pets-mrsa.com (information and research website)

MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus), sometimes referred to in the media as the SUPERBUG. It affects both humans and animals.  MRSA is a bacterium that, under normal conditions, is relatively harmless. Infection usually occurs through a wound of some kind, either because of a skin ulcer that will not heal or through surgery. Infection is different from colonization because the invading bacteria tend to grow more rapidly and cause ill-effects to the body. These come because of the toxins that the bacteria now pour into the blood, and through the damage that occurs to the surrounding tissue. This causes the symptoms and signs of infection, and need to be treated rapidly. For a comprehensive overview of MARSA and well as a guide to veterinary prevention methods please see The Bella Moss Foundation Website.

The Foundation also provides Continuing Professional Development seminars and educational conferences for veterinarians so they can update their knowledge on resistant strains of bacteria and treatment approaches.

The Foundation also co-ordinates an international team of veterinary experts from established academic institutions who present at conferences and provide support to veterinarians worldwide. It is now developing the first on-line training resource for veterinary nurses and other practice staff dealing with animal infections.

The award of full charitable status means that The Foundation can now look forward to gaining more support for its work in the future: “This is marvelous news for The Foundation as we are now in a position to raise funds for academic research and educational events that will increase vets’ knowledge of MRSA in animals,” says Jill Moss.

The Foundation, which will be launching its Charity status at Crufts this year, has attracted support from across the human and animal welfare spectrum. Its Patron is Claire Rayner, President of the Patients’ Association, and its Vice President is Peter Purves, the former Blue Peter presenter and familiar presence at many of the UK’s companion dog events who says, "I am delighted to hear that the valuable work done in the area of infectious diseases in animals can now move on to the next phase due to the Bella Moss Foundation's new status as a charity. The extent of MRSA and other diseases in dogs is not really known, only the fact that the numbers are rising. Vets will welcome the support and information provided by the charity - I can see nothing but good coming from this.”
